Helping people to put the 'butt out' in community

Date posted: 18 December 2015

Apunipima Cape York Health Council recently visited Lockhart River in Queensland (Qld), to encourage community members to 'butt out' from smoking for good. The organisation's healthy lifestyle team brought an interactive display with them, which included a physical diorama of a smoker's lungs and mouth. The display also shed some light on the various toxic chemicals contained in cigarettes and a jar of tar, which can gradually build up in a smoker's body over time. This particular jar represented the amount of tar that can build up in as little a time as a year, from only half a packet of cigarettes a day.

The team also visited schools, with a different presentation on the dangers of smoking, more suited to younger age groups.
