Smoker of fifty years endorses anti-smoking ads as Quitline webchat service launched

Philip Deegan, an Adelaide smoker of fifty years, turned to Quitline for help giving up cigarettes on New Year's Eve in 2014. Mr Deegan has supported Quitline's media campaign, saying that anti-smoking advertising is working and that it should be further increased. 'It got to the stage of smoking forty or more, and for ten years or so I'd thought about giving up,' he said. 'Without a doubt the negative advertisement is a benefit and the more there is, the better.'

Mr Deegan has helped Quitline launch a new webchat service in South Australia as part of World No Tobacco Day. It is part of the State Government's 2017-2020 Tobacco Control Strategy, which plans to reduce smoking rates in South Australia by one third.

Substance Abuse Minister Leesa Vlahos said the Quitline strategy, which includes maintaining media and social media campaigns, would target long-term smokers and at risk groups.

'We'll be particularly looking at how we can decrease smoking rates amongst all communities, particularly looking at Aboriginal community and people suffering from mental health illnesses as well...We know those communities have higher smoking rates than average. The Aboriginal community has around 30 per cent smoking rate.'

About 21 South Australians die of smoking-related causes each week, including cancer, heart disease and respiratory conditions.
