National guidelines for medication-assisted treatment of opioid dependence.

Canberra: National Drug Strategy

This document is intended to provide a broad policy context and a framework for medication-assisted treatment of opioid dependence.

It provides clinical guidelines on approaches involving the use of methadone, buprenorphine or naltrexone for the treatment of opioid dependence. It aims to provide guidance in the selection and management of patients seeking pharmacotherapies for opioid dependence, and to support the provision to patients of accurate information about methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone.

Information includes:

  • treatment planning
  • detoxification
  • substitution treatment
  • relapse prevention: naltrexone maintenance treatment
  • good clinical practice.

This document updates and replaces four previously separate documents:

  • National pharmacotherapy policy for people dependent on opioids
  • Clinical guidelines and procedures for the use of methadone in the maintenance treatment of opioid dependence
  • National clinical guidelines and procedures for the use of buprenorphine in the maintenance treatment of opioid dependence
  • Clinical guidelines and procedures for the use of naltrexone in the management of opioid dependence.
